House Cosponsors Still Needed for Teaching Rule Bill: Is your Representative on Board?”

Dear anesthesiology program chair—

Here’s a startling fact for all academics:  some Members of Congress have not signed on to Teaching Rule legislation—even though there is a program in their District!!! (See this table for details).

What’s more, several of these Members were cosponsors during the last Congressional session.

As the chair of your program, YOU are the voice of academic anesthesiology.  How will your Member of Congress know the impact of the unfair 50% payment penalty on your program?

YOU have to tell them.

Call the Capitol Switchboard today at (202) 225-3121 and use the talking points below to ask your Representative to cosponsor H.R. 2053.  Your action may be all it takes for your Member of Congress to become a cosponsor.

Also, forward this link to your colleagues and residents so they can take action, too:

To ensure consideration of H.R. 2053 this year, we must have your help.  Please take action today.

Medicare Anesthesiology Teaching Rule legislation
H.R. 2053

Issue:

  • Medicare cuts payments to teaching anesthesiologists in half when they supervise residents on overlapping cases.
  • The unfair 50% payment penalty only affects physician anesthesiology residency programs, and is costing programs an average of $400,000 per year, with some losing over $1 million per year (use your program numbers here).
  • Without this funding, programs are unable to recruit and retain faculty, or to advance vital research initiatives.  In some cases, the programs are closing all together: 28 programs have ended due in part to the 50% payment penalty, and 6 more are on probation facing closure.

Congressional request:

  • Cosponsor H.R. 2053
  • Restore full Medicare payment to anesthesiology teaching programs
  • Urge inclusion in larger, Medicare package
