SAAC: A member of the Society of Academic Anesthesiology Chairs is an Administrative Head of a Department or a Division of Anesthesiology in an LCME-approved, or provisionally approved, Medical School in the United States or Puerto Rico.

AAPD: A member of the Association of Anesthesiology Program Directors is a program director of an anesthesiology residency program in the United States that has been approved by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Overlap: There is considerable overlap in the two organizations; there are, however, academic departments with no residency as there are residency programs not based within a medical school.
